making a difference
It’s easy to save energy, money and do your bit for the environment, beginning with a few small changes. The easiest way to save energy is usually right in front of you. If you use a PC or monitor, and leave it on standby it still uses energy. By switching them off you can reduce their energy consumption up to 75% of per year. Just think how it all adds up the more computers are in the office.
Remember - screensavers don’t save energy, they just protect your monitor. Switch both your screen and your machine off at night. Or if you’re going to be away from your desk for a while, just switch the monitor off.
Switch photocopiers and printers off at night – printers can consume a lot of energy, so check to see if the standby mode is activated during the day. Where possible, read emails and edit documents on screen to minimize the number of pages you need to send to print - that way you save on both energy and paper.
When you’re putting on the kettle for the office elevenses, only boil as much water as you need to save energy. When you’re finished, if you’re putting your cup in the dishwasher, wait until it’s full before switching it on.
Phone chargers still use energy when they’re plugged in, even if they’re not charging your phone. When you’ve finished charging your phone, make sure you unplug it. Similarly, if there’s a TV in the office reception, ensure it’s switched off fully every night.
